Leaky Gut Syndrome

Leaky Gut Syndrome

Leaky gut is a widespread problem in the western part of the world and precedes many serious health conditions including the debilitating autoimmune disease, allergies, mal-nutrition and dysbiosis. Leaky gut has until recently been something only known to the natural health industry, where we were once considered quacks for even considering the notion. More recently however, it has become much more accepted by the mainstream medical model, and there is now a lot of research to back it up.

As well as digestion, absorption and electrolyte homeostasis, the gut plays a role in the regulation of antigen carrying across the gut and to the gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), for GALT immune activation and regulation. The gut wall is composed of tight junctions which control the balance between self-tolerance and the immune defence to antigens.

Tight junctions can become compromised however. Zonulin is a modulator of tight junction integrity. It is a protein that causes the intracellular tight junctions to widen, and allows pathogens and food particles to make contact with the GALT and enter the blood stream where it triggers immune activation and causes a massive burden on the body. This is where autoimmune diseases start in genetically susceptible people and the over activity of the immune system to harmless substances develops.

Zonulin is used as a bio-marker for impaired gut barrier function, a few autoimmune diseases and tumour markers. It is particularly active in the development of coeliac disease and type 1 diabetes mellitus and its release is triggered by gliadin in wheat. Previously, there was only one option for the down regulation of zonulin – the complete removal of wheat.

There is however, a new piece for our tool kit as natural health practitioners. A study published in the Journal of The International Society of Sports Nutrition (2015), demonstrated a significant decrease in zonulin and leaky gut parameters after just 12 weeks of supplementation with clinoptilolite zeolite. Just 12 weeks was enough to exert a beneficial effect on the integrity of the intestinal wall and decrease concentrations of zonulin. As well as this, inflammation in the gut was reduced.

Toxaprevent capsules by pass the stomach in order to release their contents into the intestines where they get to work and bind harmful substances, inflammatory mediators and improve the integrity of the intestinal barrier. As well as the benefits of clinoptilolite on its own, Toxaprevent ACUTE also contains colostrum, an excellent combination for those with leaky gut, and a great supplement for practitioners.

As natural health practitioners, it is essential that we use a multi therapeutic approach for leaky gut. Removing wheat, supplementing with Toxaprevent acute and de-stressing are the most beneficial trio and will greatly improve your client’s health.
